Perhaps I made my first mistake when I traded Brad Marchand for Grigorenko and a second round pick.

Ouch man, I feel for you on that one, especially after the year Marchand had.

I traded Kari Lehtonen, Lee Stempniak and Dennis Widemen in exchange for Hampus Lindholm and Nick Ritchie.

Sounds like a quick way for Bob Murray to lose his job.

Each season we draft five players, meaning I have to drop five players from my roster.
- Lucas Neilson

If there is nothing left on the board can you just keep your roster players and give-up a late round draft pick?

Not sure what your entire roster is but Nick Ritchie would probably be on my drop list.

Great job, Lucas. That Gibson trade was fantastic.

I'm going to watch the draft with a buddy of mine who traded me Matthews + Carter + Josi (rental) + Bishop (rental) for Tavares + Rinne last season. Can't wait until the Leafs pick Matthews and I can remind him about the trade that gave me my 3rd straight title along with another building block for a possible 4th.

Already got my scouting spread sheet started for our next draft. Once keepers are confirmed by all teams (usually during training camp) and salaries are recalibrated (done through Fantrax) I'll make my final adjustments. As of now I'll be going into the draft with Seguin, Tarasenko, Backstrom, Kucherov, Neal, Letang, Burns, Holtby as keepers and Panarin, Matthews and Vasilevskiy as my "minors"

Can't wait for more regular fantasy blogs again and hope to see you do more Leafs blogs in the future

My goal was to end up last and draft first - so it panned out, I'm just hoping in 2 seasons im not missing marchands hits, PIM's and points.

Often those types of players have a smaller shelf life due to their feisty game, we shall see. As of now it's the only trade I really lost out on, the others I felt were even or I helped my team improve.

Bottom line, I still have at least 1 more full season before I'm in the top 5...patience!

45 players total, so it's good to have some grinders like Ritchie. (in year 1 of rebuild I don't have a ton of guys like him, so for now I'll hold onto him). Hits and PIM count like any other stat.

Basically you MUST drop 5 guys by a certain date and then the rosters lock, not until draft day can you pick those players up that were dropped by the ten teams. So you could end up using your draft pick(s) for players who are free agents.

Down the road I may go this route, but for now I'm working at drafting high end prospects and hope they blossom sooner than later.

It still amazes me that trade went through!

I think with that core roster + minors you are in great shape for yet another hoisting!!!

Thanks buddy, looking forward to the draft and free agency - could be a booming year movement wise.
